Why would I need my teeth whitened?
"If you're not using your smile, you're like a man with a million dollars in the bank and no checkbook."-- Les Giblin. Our teeth do not remain in the prestine state of our infancy. A lifetime of eating, drinking, chewing and aging will show itself on the enamel surface of our teeth. Stains, cracks and thinning enamel will create a yellowish, brown or grayish-blue cast to our teeth. The ever growing popularity of teeth whitening proves that many people realize the benefit of restoring the original whiteness and luster of their teeth. Your smile is the second thing that people notice about you, after your eyes, and the youthful vitality and confidence that a dazzling smile can convey is going to benefit you in any social or business situation.
What treatments are available?
There are many whitening treatments available today and each will generally produce a certain amount of success. Whitening products are designed to restore your teeth to their original color by removing debris and build-up. Professional teeth bleaching, on the other hand, will lighten your teeth beyond their natural color to a brighter and more dazzling condition.
Teeth bleaching in-office involves the use of bleaching gels and trays. The peroxide bleaching gel used is of a higher concentration than that found in over-the-counter kits and should be used only under the supervision of a professional. The dentist will have custom mouth trays manufactured to hold the gel in the optimum position. You can complete this treatment at home and within a few days, unless you teeth are very heavily stained, you can achieve shades up to 5 times whiter.
Bleaching gel can also be used in-office in conjunction with a laser light. The laser will activate the gel to perform at an even higher rate of whitening and ,usually, within an hour you can have teeth that are up to 9 shades whiter.
Are there any side effects to Tooth Whitening?
Because of the high concentration of chemicals in professional bleaching, sometimes, gum soreness or tooth sensitivity can be experienced. But these effects will disappear with the completion of the treatment.
How long will my teeth stay whiter?
Unless you plan to give up drinking wine, eating berry pie, or stopping smoking, you will need to maintain the whiteness of your teeth through periodic re-treatments. Also, following a good oral hygiene routine will help you to maintain the effects of your treatment.
